Furniture - Planning Your Room

Plan your room before you buy your furniture.

All the fun of re-doing a room in your home is in buying the furniture, soft furnishings and accessories that will make it look fresh and new. If you’re to get it right though, you need to plan first. Planning may be much duller than shopping, but it’s essential if you’re to make the most of your money and get the perfect look you’re after.

Planning for Furniture

If you’re redecorating and refurnishing your room from scratch, you’ll probably know what sort of furniture you’re looking for and what you want the room to look like when you’re finished. You may even have put together a mood board, or a scrapbook of the things you’d like to include. This is a great place to start, but don’t run out and buy the first piece of furniture that matches your colour scheme. Just a little bit of forward planning will help you to avoid mistakes and could actually save time and money:

  • Paper plan – first of all, make a paper plan. This just means drawing a scaled plan of your room, marking the length and width and the placement of doors and windows. You might also want to mark electrical sockets and television points. Draw in where you would like your furniture to go and take measurements so that you can see how your ideas would actually fit into your room. You may be able to find an online resource that lets you do this type of plan in 3D, so that you can see how much space you would have between pieces of furniture and what other things you could fit into your room.
  • Space plan – if the room you want to decorate is empty, it can be a good idea to mark out the areas where you think the furniture will go. This is something that’s often advised for people redoing bathrooms or kitchens. Not only can you see exactly how much space each piece of furniture takes up, but allows you to make sure there is adequate walking space between pieces, whether sockets are accessible and how well-balanced your plans are.
  • Flexibility – your plan needs to be flexible so that you can alter it if you need to. For example, if you originally wanted a six-seater dining table, but you think you could actually fit an eight-seater into the space, be prepared to make adjustments for the new size on your plan, as it will also affect the other pieces of furniture you’re going to have in the room.

Re-doing a room from scratch can be exciting, but it’s also quite daunting. There are many things to think about, and the furniture is just one of them. Planning before you start is important for all aspects of the job – decorating, curtains, lights and flooring – and it will help you to ensure that everything runs more smoothly.
