Furniture for your Hallway

We’re all used to shopping for the furniture that really matters – a new bed, a coffee table or dining room chairs, for example. It’s easy to plan a whole room redecoration, but forget about the other spaces in your home that can benefit from a strategically-placed chair or table. The hallway is one of these places.

The Right Furniture for your Hallway

Although you may not have a stately home with an enormous entrance hall, many houses do have some sort of hallway, entrance porch or general area before you reach the main rooms. For many people, that’s where the phone sits, the post goes, the shoes are taken off and other items stored. Your hallway is the first thing that visitors see, so it makes sense to spend some time thinking about the best use of furniture in this area:

  • Chairs – if you have space, somewhere to sit and take your shoes off when you come into the house, to sit in a corner with the paper, or just to provide decoration is ideal in your hallway. Choose a chair that fits in with your space – a giant wing-back might look great, but it could take up too much room. A smaller chair can help to turn your hallway from a passage to an extra room in your home.
  • Tables – console tables are idea pieces of hall furniture. Not too deep, and at the right height for storing the sort of things you need in the hall, they can provide a great focal point. For small spaces, use a delicate table, which gives the feeling of more space. Larger hallways can accommodate more than one console table, so buying a matching pair is a great idea. These tables are commonly used for phones, keys, photographs, post and more.
  • Mirrors – a good mirror will help to make your hallway look bigger and many people use them for exactly that reason. In addition, the hall mirror is where many people check out their appearance before they leave home, so as well as being decorative, a hall mirror is almost indispensable!
  • Accessories – there are many other pieces of furniture you might find in a hallway – an umbrella stand, coat racks and show racks or boxes are just a few examples. Don’t clutter your hallway with accessories, but the right ones could help you to create a welcoming entrance to your home.
